Polar Bear
Chewing Gum EP
Dry Hump Records

Children of the 60s must be laughing their asses off. For all the criticism they've taken for following the Stones, the Who, and every other reformed supergroup around, their kids finally have done the same thing, following Janes Addiction around the Relapse Tour and buying the greatest hits album. You can't blame Eric Avery for bowing out of the proceedings gracefully, and going a different way. And it's easy to see why he did it once you hear Polar Bear, Avery's project with Ethyl Meatplow drummer and sampler Biff Sanders and guitarist Thomas Von Wendt. This five-song EP promises great things to come from the group, covering a lot of territory in a short time. Janes' fans should be instantly happy with the laid-back bass groove of "Monkey," dreaming of "Summertime Rolls." Apparently, Avery was more responsible than previously thought for Janes Addiction's sound. But this is no has-been trying to reclaim former glory. "Water," the next track, has more in common with David Bowie's new stuff than Perry & Co. There are even flashes of Beck on "Gimmee," with its trippy industrial beat, backwards-sounding bridge, and spoken lyrics. Somehow, a bawdy muted-trumpet works perfectly over an angular guitar line that flows from verse to verse. Let's hope Polar Bear decides to release a full-length sometime soon.
