John Lennon
Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon
Parlaphone Records

Forgive me for quoting Dirk Nasty, but all you need is cash. What other reason could there be for a label to put out a greatest hits collection nearly identical to one they put out years earlier? Legend is twenty of John Lennonâs biggest and most recognized songs, put together in a slick package with some cool black and white photos of Lennon, Phil Spector, and Yoko. There arenât even any liner notes by someone claiming to be an expert on the Beatles or even a distant cousin of anyone who know the artist.

The music is still here, and itâs still great. The standards, like "Imagine," "Instant Karma," "Working Class Hero," and "Give Peace a Chance" are still powerful, even if theyâve lost a little shine after hearing them in elevators and over PA at the local grocery. "Watching the Wheels" is just as beautiful and optimistic as ever, and "Cold Turkey" is just as grating and somewhat frightening. But did we really need to be told this again?

There are only three or four songs different from The John Lennon Collection, the first package released a while ago. One of those songs is "Nobody Told Me." That seemed kind of a glaring error, but there was no need to release a completely different album to correct it. "Move Over Ms. L" is replaced by "Borrowed Time" in Legend, replacing a fairly disposable song with one a bit more meaningful. Again, it was only one song on a compilation.

Whether or not you buy Legend will have a lot to do with whether you own most of the albums or a previous collection. There are no lost or rare tracks, nothing digitally remastered, and nothing really added to the legend. Lennonâs music speaks for itself, and doesnât really need to be propped up by the pretense of a greatest hits package. But if all youâre after is the hits, this will do. A completely unnecessary collection, but one containing great music, nonetheless.
