Interstate '76 Activision Let me say this first - I don't like car games. Every one I've played so far has just bored me. Then I was fortunate enough to receive The Interstate '76 Arsenal from Activision. This game is a blast. More accurately, this game is a blast from the past. I know that this sounds like some cheap promo that Activision wrote up for me to reiterate to you, but it's not. This game really is different than any other car game I've played. The basic idea is this: it's 1976 and you're a vigilante who is out to clean up the highways. You've got a bad-ass car, a lot of guns, bell bottoms, and sideburns. It's time to crank up the Earth, Wind, and Fire and whoop some ass. The game starts off a little slow, but for good reason. It takes you through the paces of what to do and how to do it. You learn your basic controls and get a little practice behind the wheel. After that, it's all fun and games. The action never stops. The whole idea is to kill all the bad guys. No big puzzles to figure out - just how to upgrade your car and weapons so you can get some more killing done. The graphics for Interstate '76 are excellent. The colors are vivid and there is an incredible amount of detail. The games is optimized for 3Dfx and Rendition, but will run under Direct 3D as well. Not having the 3Dfx or Rendition myself, I ran the game in Direct 3D mode. My performance suffered a little but it looked nice enough to outweigh the speed loss. Gameplay was excellent as well. The controls were responsive and simple to configure and the game played reasonably well on my old P133. Within the game there is a good selection of cars and weapons to choose from, which definitely allows you personalized things to your tastes. One other nicety is the short animations that play every so often throughout the game. You would get to see the main characters, all decked out in bell bottoms and afros, talking the 70s lingo while feeding you the story line. And since the game loosely follows a story-based arc, the little animated movies not only provide excellent entertainment, but also give you hints and tips throughout the game. My only complaint is that Interstate '76 wasn't quite as challenging as it could have been. At times, it just seemed a little bit too easy to get through and you wished for the opponents to be a little more abundant or better armed, or maybe just a little bit smarter. Through the first half of the game this isn't a factor, but as you get farther along, it definitely could have been a little more difficult. In the end, I'd say Interstate '76 is worth the money. It was a lot of fun to play and at times, a lot of fun to watch. The only reason you might be disappointed is if you're looking for a real challenge. In that case, keep on looking. Otherwise, you should enjoy the ride. -Chris M. |
